A training for government representatives using IOMC Toolbox for decision-making “Key elements of national systems for sound chemicals management” was held from 9 to 12 April 2019 in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan.
The meeting was organized as a joint event in the framework of the projects “Establishment of key elements of national systems for a sound chemicals management in selected countries in Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia” funded by German Federal Environment Agency and “IOMC Toolbox for decision making in chemicals management – Phase III: from design to action” funded by the European Commission.
Objectives of the workshop:
- provide government representatives and other stakeholders with knowledge of the basic elements of a sound chemicals management system and available information resources;
- apply knowledge in solving practical problems with the help of experts;
- sharing country experiences and expectations for sound chemicals management.
The following chemicals management topics were addressed during the workshop:
- chemicals management throughout their life cycle and information resources available from the IOMC toolbox;
- globally harmonized system for the classification and labeling of chemicals and their mixtures and its implementation at the national level;
- chemicals risk assessment;
- regulation of biocides in the European Union and control of non-agricultural pests;
- inspections to monitor compliance with the law (REACH, biocides).
The seminar was attended by experts from 12 countries: Belarus, Moldova, Ukraine, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan.
The seminar was attended by specialists of the Centre on behalf of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus together with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Belarus (Alexander Zhelobkevich, head of the waste management department) and the Main State Inspectorate on seed production, plant quarantine and protection (Natalia Kazakevich, Head of the Department of Registration of Chemical and Biological Plant Protection Products and Fertilizers).
The workshop was organized by the WHO European Center for Environment and Health, WHO Headquarter, WHO Representative Office in Kazakhstan and the National Center for Public Health of the Ministry of Health of Kazakhstan.
