Every year, on 31 May, WHO and partners mark World No Tobacco Day (WNTD), highlighting the health and additional risks associated with tobacco use, and advocating for effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption.
The main goal of the initiative is to demonstrate the threats that the tobacco industry poses to the sustainable development of all countries, including the health and economic well-being of their citizens. Moreover it proposes measures that governments and the public should take to promote health and development by confronting the global tobacco crisis.
The global tobacco epidemic kills nearly 6 million people each year, of which more than 600 000 are non-smokers dying from breathing second-hand smoke. Unless we act, the epidemic will kill more than 8 million people every year by 2030. More than 80% of these preventable deaths will be among people living in low-and middle-income countries.
The republican unitary enterprise «Scientific practical centre of hygiene» takes part in the republican awareness-raising initiative «Belarus against tobacco». On 31 May 2017 it was organized the discussion and change experience on the topic «The reason why I don't smoke».
